ADVICE ON ENGLISH STUDY

Read out loud. I keep telling people, you can read, but read out loud. Not shout, not like crazy English. Don't disturb everybody else. Loud enough to hear yourself.

If you do that, you know what? You have to pronounce the words. You don't just read it. You have to go and think about it and then pronounce the word, even if you pronounce it wrong. It doesn't matter. You are trying to pronounce English. You hear the way you pronounce it. So guess what? You hear English. Not only read it, you hear it and speak it.

What more can you ask for? Only other thing you could ask for is doing it right. But if you do it wrong, that's still ok. Because you will learn after a while what is right and wrong. Your first steps are just doing it. Get into the habit of hearing English.

(What is your answer about this one: How to improve my English?) Oh, yes, "how to improve my English." the famous question that is asked over and over and over. How can I improve my English? And I say, Practise, Practise again, and more and more and more. And they are not very happy. Do you know why they are not happy? They are looking for the magic secret that makes it all easy.

I don't think Chinese students should try to read the classics. They are too difficult. I have read avidly, a-v-i-d-l-y, avidly read all my life. I enjoy reading. And there are few of the classics that I attempt, because it's hard work. It's hard work. If it's hard for a native English speaker with a vocabulary of... I bet you I know 200,000 words. Hard to believe but I tried a test, to see how many in the dictionary I knew. And I know a lot of words.

And the classics use words very well, but they are words that are not used in oral English, they are only used in written English. And it's hard work. So don't do it. Don't do it.
